I'm a little "off". That's what I've been told my entire life.
I've always marched to the beat of my own drummer and not everyone has understood, or appreciated, my views on life.
In all of the crazy twists and turns that my life has taken, one thing has remained constant. I have always seemed the opportunity to play. To live a life outside of the box with a sense of spontaneity and adventure.
When I reached my 40s, I started realizing that I had lost myself a bit. My life had majorly gone off the rails from the path I initially planned for myself. I was no longer the free-spirited girl that I had been, and I had stopped playing. I was stuck and unhappy.
During the same time, I began studying more about movement and health, and an idea began to take root.
I began to see the connection between movement and healing, both for physical pain and emotional turmoil. I realized that just as an injured joint that is bound and immobile will not heal, the same goes for the lost soul. The simple act of taking a forward step, of doing something new, is often all that is needed to start our inner healing process and return the ability to play.
AND SO HERE I AM
I live with my two kids and my husband just south of Denver. I've worn a lot of different hats in my past, but what I do best is listening to others, solving problems, and helping them get unstuck and back on their life track. I just often stink at solving my own, but that's about to change.
The COVID-19 Pandemic has brought an opportunity to pursue a new path and follow through on a thought I've had since becoming a mother. Not only do I want to bring play back to my own life, but I was to allow my kids to experience the joy of learning through play instead of being stuck behind a desk for hours at a time. We are ditching the classroom and venturing out on a homeschooling journey, and while I have a Masters in Education, 20 years of teaching hasn't prepared me for this moment.
This blog is two parts. First, it's about me taking my own advice and seeing where it leads me, with the goal of getting back to my original path and sense of who I am and returning to play. Second, it's about my family's adventure of transitioning to homeschool life, disconnecting from the screens, and reconnecting to learning fueled by creativity, curiosity, and play. We all need more movement and fun in our lives, and this is the time to bring that back.
Move Heal Play is more of a directive to me to start implementing what I teach to others - start moving to promote healing, and as you heal you begin to play again. My interests and education span from injury rehab, to movement therapy, to nutrition, to education. You'll find a bit of it all in what I write, all with the goal of living a life more aligned to my authentic self, and with the hope that you are inspired to do the same
